Just thinking

So I was doing some reading and happened upon an article that said that a study was conducted and concluded that America is the world's most dangerous place to give birth.

The mortality rates of women and infants is more than that of other countries. I wondered, "Why might this be?" "What could be done to change this?" Of course, in the back of my mind, I have thought, "How many of these women had doulas attending their births?" but, I don't think that it would be reasonable to say that the mere presence of a doula solves everything. There are women in other countries that give birth well into their 70s and they have the strength of someone that is younger... maybe the way that we were programmed to view birth makes expectant parents panic and think that its the norm to give birth in chaos and mayhem. What if we spent more time showing peaceful births on tv? What if expectant mothers could glean from people that are informed whether it be from firsthand experience or from assisting those in need of assistance? What if we changed our mindsets to look at pregnancy and birth as something that is commonplace and people just did what the heck their bodies told them to do and moved on? But how would we begin to introduce such a change in our world as people in America?

*smirk* I guess doulas really can change the world...
